The dining and food industries are a major component of the McLaren Vale region, and visitors should ensure they enjoy more than just the wine. The region is renown for it's local production of almonds and olives, cheeses, berries and vegetables, beef, lamb and trout. Olives are another of the region's well-known products. They were originally farmed by Greek and Italian immigrants in the 1800's and have thrived in the region's climate which is identical to that of the mediterranean. Many wine makers still line the perimeters of their vineyards with olive trees.
